PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for coating a butt end of a planar body by which the repeated coating process of coating material is unnecessitated and operation man-hour is reduced accordingly. SOLUTION: In the method for coating a butt end of a planar body, the coating material of desirable color as an overcoating material is applied on the butt end of a wooden planar body, a thermal transfer sheet which is not penetrable by the coating material and is highly adhesive is stuck to the butt end surface of the planar body, the coating material is applied to the surface of the stuck thermal transfer sheet and, thereby, the coating material is prevented from penetrating into the planar body and the repeated coating operation to the butt end is unnecessitated.
