PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating method for improving the start of operation which takes time for start up before the stable operation, improving the lowered rate of utilizing water, and improving the increase in running costs such as electricity expenses, when the ooperation is started. SOLUTION: This operating method for manufacturing the deionized water comprises passing the water to be treated to an electric deionized water manufacturing apparatus formed by alternately disposing cation exchange membranes and anion exchange membranes between an anode chamber and a cathode chamber, alternately forming desalting chambers and thickening chambers between both these membranes, and packing ion exchangers in at least the desalting chamber of an electrodialyzer. Liquid having an electric conductivity lower than the electric conductivity of the condensate is supplied to the thickening chamber at least at the volumetric amount of the chamber after the stoppage of the impressed voltage between the anodes and cathodes after the deionized water is manufactured and thereafter the supply of the water is stopped.
