A machine for assembling a stack of slats respectively located between successive crossconnections of the ladder tapes or cords of a Venetian blind comprises horizontally adjustable spaced units each including a lifting device 14 guided on a guide plate 13, into which device the slats 17 are fed individually and horizontally by a drive 4 which periodically operates the lifting device consisting of plate 14 with projecting pins 16 to receive the slats and suspended from a tape 15 secured to the circumference of a pulley 12 on shaft 4, to a position where the slat is held in a stack formed from below and held, and suspension and tensioning means for holding the ladder carries cords 38 vertically and spreading the side cords apart to accommodate a slat being fed, such suspension and tensioning means being both mounted on the frame 1 and being alternatively replaceable for tape ladders or cord ladders and adjustable horizontally along the machine, as by mounting on the plate 31 secured to the frame 1 by screw 82. The ladder cords 38 are guided and tensioned by passing through spring pressed rollers 35 and are spread apart by a plate 39, Fig. 5a, pivoted on a rooking plate 31 pivoted at 32 to supporting plate 31 and carries on its rear surface a pin 60 adapted to be guided by a slot 61 in the lift plate 14 and tipping element 62 to tilt the plate 31 to and fro to move the cord ladder alternately from side to side with the assembly of the successive slats, whereby a needle 56 on a vertically movable mounting 55, with a lift cord 58 threaded through the eye 57 of the needle may be pushed through aligned holes in the slats to thread the lift cord therethrough. Alternative U shaped guides 19 for different slat widths may be provided and mounted on a disc rotatable to select a particular guide 19, or the distance between the legs of the guide may be adjustable.
