<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture processing method by which working efficiency is enhanced while securing required quality in preparing a picture to be carried on a page space in preparing the page space of a newspaper or the like. <P>SOLUTION: Processes comprise: color picture processing required for the color original picture, that is, optimization processing for correcting picture quality suitable for printing; cutting processing for cutting out a major object from the picture; and trimming and background setting processing for removing the unnecessary portion of the original picture. Each processing section 22, 23, and 24 carries out each of the processing in accordance with the instructions of an operator while displaying the processing states on the screen of a display section 5. In addition, a black-and-white picture preparation section 21 prepares the black-and-white original picture from the color original picture.
