PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an audio recording device which compresses and encodes audio information and records it on a recording medium, to help user set compressibility used to record the audio information. SOLUTION: A control part 8 receives a choice of music to be read out of a CD-DA disk 15 and recorded in an external memory device 16 and a setting of compressibility used for the recording from the user through an operation part 13. The control part 8 decides whether all selected pieces of music can be recorded in the external memory device 16 with the received compressibility by reference to the free capacity of the external memory device 16, and calculates and presents to the user compressibility with which all of the selected pieces of music can be recorded in the external memory device 16 when not. When the user indicates recording with the presented compressibility, a CD reproduction part is made to read the selected pieces of music out of the CD-DA disk 15, an audio coder 6 is made to compress and encode the pieces of music with the calculated compressibility, and the compressed and encoded pieces of music are recorded in the external memory device 16.
