PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine an operating mode of a recording/reproducing device to be functionally coupled to a receiver. SOLUTION: In the system wherein a receiver 22' receives a great number of transmitted television signals, a reference tuner 66 and a received signal detector 60 are provided, the reference tuner 66 tunes a reference signal matched to the transmitted television signal, and the signal detector 60 detects a program signal displayed on the receiver 22', a processor is arranged for determining the operating mode of a recording/reproducing device 94 from the reference signal, determining a signal from the recording/reproducing device and determining the program signal.
