PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an image of interest in an image file using a method that imposes little processing load, by making a determination using the characteristics of a quantization table. SOLUTION: For each predetermined block, spatial frequency information, chromaticity information and a quantization table are obtained from image data recorded by compressed recording, and are used in combination to search for an image of interest in the image data, whereby information including ac component information for each image data block is obtained, without advanced calculations, to enable search for the image of interest in the image file.
