The method involves applying a voltage to a coil winding (16) starting at a first time point, whereby the current flowing in the coil winding and the applied voltage are determined from the first time point to a second time point and the electromagnetic losses are determined from the measured values. The second time point is selected as a time at which there is no current flowing in the coil. AN Independent claim is also included for a device with an evaluation unit for implementing the inventive method.
