During the sterilizing by steam of closed containers (4), filled with a liquid pharmaceutical product (2) and/or air (1) and sealed with a sliding stopper (3), the pressure within the container is measured continuously. The sensor signals are used to form a control value to adjust the back pressure, so that the back pressure and the pressure within the container are equal. The stopper movements are registered by ultrasonics or optically. During the sterilizing by steam of closed containers (4), filled with a liquid pharmaceutical product (2) and/or air (1) and sealed with a sliding stopper (3), the pressure within the container is measured continuously. The measurements are either directly through a link to a pressure sensor (6) within the container, or an external sensor (5) which registers stopper movements through pressure differences between the interior and exterior of the container. The sensor signals are used to form a control value to adjust the back pressure, so that the back pressure and the pressure within the container are equal. The stopper movements are registered by ultrasonics or optically.
