The aggregate frame is displaced in the longitudinal direction of the machine by an accelerating drive (21) supporting the aggregate drive. The accelerating drive is rigidly connected to the machine frame by a drive fixing device and has on one piston end a support plunger for temporary placement on the aggregate frame. A maximum stroke of the accelerating drive is shorter than a maximum displacement path (a) between the machine and aggregate frames. The tamping machine (1) has a machine frame (2) supported on two rail chassis (3), and an aggregate frame (11) arranged between the rail chassis and moving on the rails via a chassis (14) with an aggregate drive (18).
