A method of making a motor stator 10 is disclosed, the stator 10 including an inner stator part 12 and an outer stator part 14. The method includes placing the inner stator part 12 inside the outer stator part 14, and relatively rotating the stator parts 12, 14 such that the inner stator part 12 is retained with respect to the outer stator part 14 by means of an interference fit. The outer end surfaces 25 of the pole pieces 16 are shaped so that, as the stator parts 12, 14 are relatively rotated, an increasingly tight fit between the end surfaces 25 and the adjoining areas 26 of the outer part 14 is achieved. A protuberance 29 may be provided to increase the effectiveness of the fit. Due to the shape of the outer end surfaces 25 of the pole pieces, there is a clearance between the outer and inner stator parts 12, 14 when they are first brought together, allowing ease of assembly in comparison with previous slidingly coupled stator parts. Due to the clearance between the outer and inner stator parts 12, 14, which achieve an interference fit only upon relative rotation, the parts 12, 14, which are each formed as a stack of laminations, may be simultaneously stamped from metal sheet with less wastage. |
