The manufacturing process for a rigid component (1) with a supple inset in its visible face (24) consists of attaching the supple covering layer (2), e.g. of leather or fabric, to a relatively rigid backing element (4) of appropriate shape and with a resistance that prevents any substantial deformation during a foam filling stage. The rigid component support (10), e.g. of wood and/or metal, together with the inset material and backing element are placed in a foaming mould with a cavity corresponding to the shape of the finished component, and foam (28) is injected under the covering layer to bond it to the support. The backing element, which covers only the edge of the supple layer, can be made from a thermoformable material, and the covering layer can be bonded to it during the thermoforming process. Where necessary a sealing film layer can be incorporated under the supple layer to prevent the foam passing through its pores. |
