Mass spectrometer

A mass spectrometer is disclosed wherein a sample is combusted or pyrolysed and the combustion or pyrolysis products are ionised and mass analysed by a magnetic sector mass analyser. The mass chromatogram data is then processed by adding an offset to either the major isotope data or the minor isotope data. The offset is then varied until the sample isotopic ratio substantially equals the background isotopic ratio.
