A battery container (1) comprising a box (3) with a lid (4). Ventilation openings (9) are provided in the sides (5) of the box (3). Part of the sides (5) in which ventilation openings (9) are provided may be attached to the lid (4). Apertures (18) having drainage channels (20) beneath are provided in the lid.(4) The openings (9) and apertures (18) provide sufficient ventilation to meet the relevant regulations. The provision of apertures (18) in the lid (4) allows the overall height of the container (1) to be reduced.
