An electric motor 10 includes a stator 12 having an outer layer 24 (belt capacitor), a first intermediate layer 26 (cold plate), a second intermediate layer 28 (insulating layer) and an inner layer 30 (motor structural support), a pm rotor 14 being positioned within the stator 12. As shown in figs 1,2 at least one busbar ring 20, attached to the first intermediate layer 26, is in electrical communication with at least one bare power die 36 via phase busbars 32, the die being mounted on a liquid cooled bush bar 34. Alternatively, fig 3, the dies 36 are mounted at an end of the motor, a pancake capacitor (layer 48), a cold plate (layer 50) and liquid cooled busbars 62 forming the mount. A liquid power die attach 66 surrounded by a sealant 72 may be present between the die and the cooled busbar, an electrical interconnect liquid metal die attach 74, a interconnect substrate 77, sealent 74, thermal adhesive 78 and a heat sink 80 being present, the layers 78,80 providing further cooling of the die. Other connecting arrangements are disclosed (Fig 5c). The busbar may incorporate a cooling channel or comprise a heat pipe arrangement Fig 7a or other form of vapour/liquid heat spreader Fig 7c. |
