A method for training a high speed decoder. A communication system includes an encoder and a decoder. The encoder has a digital connection to a digital portion of a telephone network. The digital portion of the telephone network is connected by an analog loop to the decoder. The method includes the step of transmitting M repetitions of N code-words from the encoder to the decoder. M and N are integers that are known to the decoder. The codewords correspond to PCM codes utilized by the digital portion of the telephone network. At the decoder, a received sequence of analog voltage levels corresponding to the transmitted codewords is sampled. A value associated with each sample is stored and the stored values are analyzed. A parameter of the decoder is adjusted in accordance with the analysis.
