A process for the treatment of industrial effluent is described that is effective in substantially reducing the concentration of dissolved metals and/or soluble metal salts in the effluent. The process involves diverting a stream of effluent containing dissolved metals and/or sulphates through an in-line reactor (22). The effluent is reacted with an oxygen-containing gas in the in-line reactor (22) wherein the dissolved metals and/or sulphates are precipitated out of solution. A clarified solution is then separated from the precipitated sludge and recycled. The process can achieve a dramatic reduction in the total dissolved solids (TDS) and sulphates in solution. Application of the process to the treatment of scrubber effluent from a steel mill and of acid mine water in a mining environment are described. |
