The mattress, with an adjustable stiffness, has a number of lateral chambers (2a-2c,3a-3c) arranged in a number of overlaid layers. The upper layer of chambers can be accessed through barrier sections (5) from the mattress surface (1). The chambers in lower layers can be accessed through barrier sections (6) between the chambers in the top layer and any lower layers. The chambers have a circular cross section, and are filled with elastic materials with a different elasticity from that of the ground material (10) of the mattress. The chambers can also be tubes to be filled with air or water. |
