The combined anaerobic fermentation of urban sludge and solid waste comprises mixing of the sludge and the waste in proportions corresponding to their production per inhabitant equivalent of the urban zone. Acid fermentation in a closed tank to pH 3.5-5.0 for 2-4 days at ambient temperature is followed by closed-tank alkaline fermentation at pH 6.8-7.8 for 8-13 days at 28-35 degrees C.
