PURPOSE: To reduce electric power consumption without decreasing outgoing brightness. CONSTITUTION: This surface light source device 2 houses a second light guide plate 6 in a space 15 on the back 5 of a first light guide plate 4, and houses a fluorescent lamp 12 in a light source housing recess 17 on the back 11 of the second light guide plate 6. The first light guide plate 4 has fluorescent lamps 10, 10 on facing both sides 8a, 8b, takes in light of the fluorescent lamp 10, 10 from the both sides 8a, 8b, and emits it as surface-like illumination light from an outgoing surface 13. The second light guide plate 6 takes in the light of the fluorescent lamp 12 from the back 11 opposite to an outgoing surface 16 from which surface-like illumination light is emitted, and emits it from the outgoing surface 16 to the first light guide plate 4 side.
