PURPOSE: A power control method is provided to gradually decrease the power of a television receiver in the absence of a user to save power. CONSTITUTION: It is checked if the absence of a user is sensed(206). When the absence of the user is detected, the power supplied to a lamp of a television receiver is decreased(208). Then, it is checked whether or not the user's absence is detected for a predetermined period of time(212). When the user's absence is detected, the main power of the television receiver is turned off(218). It is checked whether or not the user's absence is detected for a predetermined period of time after turning off the main power(222). When the user's absence is sensed, the power and standby power supplied to the lamp are turned off(228).
