PURPOSE: A method and a system for generating low density parity check codes are provided to enable a very simple encoding method without requiring a generator matrix of a code by restricting a certain part of a parity check matrix to be lower triangular. CONSTITUTION: A digital communications system(100) includes a transmitter(101) that generates signal waveforms across a communication channel(103) to a receiver(105). In the digital communications system, the transmitter has a message source that produces a discrete set of possible messages. Each of the possible messages has a corresponding signal waveform. These signal waveforms are attenuated, or otherwise altered, by communications channel. To combat the noise channel, LDPC codes are utilized. The transmitter generates, using a relatively simple encoding technique, LDPC codes based on parity check matrices to communicate with the receiver.
