PURPOSE: A latch needle containing a latch spring having a width wider than that of a second cross section together with a shank formed by a latch slit in the vicinity and a latch pivotally mounted on the latch slit is provided. It exhibits reduced wear and susceptibility to becoming soiled as compared to conventional latch needles, thereby improving reliability. CONSTITUTION: The latch needle(1) for knitting machine comprises: a shank(2) for supporting a hook(3) and being formed by a latch slit(5) in the vicinity; a latch(4) pivotally mounted on the latch slit at a latch seating device(18); and a latch spring(19) which is aligned in the latch slit and maintained in the latch seat(23,24). The latch needle is characterized in that the latch spring has a width wider than that of a second cross section(26,27). The latch spring is mounted on both end parts of the latch seat. A first cross section is disposed in the latch seating device. The second cross section is disposed apart from the latch seating device.
