PURPOSE: A vertical alignment type liquid crystal display is provided to improve an aperture ratio of a liquid crystal display and reduce distortion of picture signals. CONSTITUTION: A plurality of gate lines are formed on a first insulating substrate. A gate insulating film is formed on the plurality of gate lines. A plurality of data lines(171) are formed on the gate insulating film. A passivation film is formed on the data lines. Pixel electrodes(190) are formed on the passivation film, having cut parts(191,192,193). A reference electrode is formed on a second insulating substrate opposite to the first insulating substrate, having cut parts. The cut parts of the pixel electrodes and the cut parts of the reference electrode divide a pixel area into a plurality of small domains, wherein the width of the small domains is below 30μm.
