PURPOSE: A DVD player using a communication interface and a method of controlling the DVD player are provided to automatically output a signal suitable for a scanning mode or signal level of a display device. CONSTITUTION: A DVD player connected to a display through a communication interface includes a signal processor(118), a video decoder(126), an audio decoder(128), an interface(124), and a controller(122). The signal processor demodulates data read from a disc into compressed video data and audio data through an error correction code and splits the compressed video data and audio data from each other. The video decoder decodes the compressed video data and outputs a video signal according to set display information. The audio decoder decodes the compressed audio data into an audio signal and converts the audio signal to a set signal output state. The interface receives information about the display from the display to interface the information to the DVD player. The controller analyzes the information and sets the signal output states of the video decoder and audio decoder.
