A GEAR SHIFT LOCK FOR A MOTOR VEHICLE COMPRISES A BODY PORTION (1, 2, 3) HAVING A RECESSED SECTION (4), THAT IS OPEN TO ONE SIDE (2A) AND TO THE TOP (3) AND BOTTOM (1) OF THE BODY PORTION IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO RECEIVE THE SHAFT OF THE GEAR SHIFT OF A MOTOR VEHICLE, A BOLT (6) WHICH IS EXTENDIBLE ACROSS THE RECESS (4) BETWEEN TWO SIDES OF THE RECESS LEAVING A SPACE FOR THE SHAFT OF THE GEARSHIFT, A LOCKING MEMBER (10, 11) WITHIN THE BODY PORTION (1, 2, 3) FOR HOLDING THE BOLT (6) IN ITS EXTENDED POSITION AND MEANS FOR MOUNTING THE LOCK IN THE MOTOR VEHICLE IN A POSITION IN WHICH THE SHAFT OF THE GEAR SHIFT CAN BE INTRODUCED INTO THE RECESS (4), THE BOLT (6) IS PREFERABLY A SIMPLE OR BAR WHICH IS SLIDABLE WITHIN THE BODY PORTION (1, 2, 3) AND MAY BE OPERATED MANUALLY, MECHANICALLY OR ELECTRICALLY. THE LOCKING MEANS (10, 11) MAY COMPRISE A KEY OPERATED LOCK OPERATING A LATCH OR THE LIKE WHICH ENGAGES WITH THE BOLT (6) OR PREFERABLY, COMPRISES THE CORE (11) OF A SOLENOID (10) THAT ENGAGES IN A RECESS OR BORE (12) IN THE BOLT (6).
