PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for using an SMS(Short Message Service) in a private exchange system are provided to simultaneously embody an SMS signal detection service, an SMS signal generation service and a voice mail service by one chip. CONSTITUTION: An analog office line interface unit(304) and an ISDN(Integrated Services Digital Network) office line interface unit(308) connect an office line with a PBX(Private Branch Exchange). A voice mail interface(312) decodes an SMS signal with a PCM(Pulse Code Modulation) type transmitted from the analog office line interface(304) and the ISDN office line interface(308), and converts the SMS signal into SMS data. The voice mail interface unit(312) converts the type of the SMS data according to a kind of a terminal which receives an SMS. A central control unit(316) switches a PCM channel of the office line to a PCM channel of a usable DSP(Digital Signal Processor), and judges a kind of the terminal which receives the SMS. An SLT(Single Line Terminal) extension interface unit(320) and a digital terminal extension interface unit(324) connect an extension with the PBX, and performs the SMS according to a kind of the terminal judged in the central control unit(316).
