PURPOSE: To achieve miniaturization, cost reduction, and improvement of power saving effect obtained by the intermittent access to a magnetic disk, in a magnetic disk drive performing the intermittent access which is attachable/detachable to/from a host device. CONSTITUTION: The miniaturization and cost reduction of the magnetic disk drive are realized by utilizing a RAM of the host device side as a part or the whole of the buffer RAM to be used for the intermittent access. Also, the number of rotation of the magnetic disk is made variably controllable, and the magnetic disk drive is operated by the access and the capacity of the buffer RAM to be utilized, at the number of rotation reducing the whole power consumption in accordance with either of the recording or reproducing operation, then the power saving effect is improved.
