The system uses a combination of two fibre types to minimize overall chromatic dispersion. The optical fibre transmission system comprises at least one length of monomode fibre with flat dispersion, and at least one section of fibre with a stepped index. The monomode fibre with flat dispersion has two zeros of chromatic dispersion outside the range of the multiplex channels. The stepped index fibre allows compensation for the chromatic dispersion induced by the flat dispersion fibre. A monomode fibre may be chosen with an absolute value of chromatic dispersion between 3 and 5.5 ps/nm.km and a rate of change of chromatic dispersion less than an absolute value of 0.04 ps/nm<2>.km, within a wavelength range of 1530 - 1600 nm. The step index fibre has an absolute value of chromatic dispersion greater than 13.5 ps/nm.km, typically 15 ps/nm.km at 1550 nm. |
