An oral composition comprises: a) 0.01 to 20% by weight of an orally acceptable soluble potassium salt such as potassium nitrate; b) 0.01-10% by weight of sodium alkylsulphate such as sodium lauryl sulphate; c) 0.01-20% by weight of an orally acceptable polar surfactant comprising a hydrophobic portion of a alkyl or a polymeric silicone group; d) an orally acceptable aqueous vehicle; wherein the molar ratio of the surfactant (c) to the sodium alkyl sulphate is greater than or equal to 1:1. The composition can contain also10-60% by weight of an abrasive silica and an effective amount of a soluble fluoride salt.
