Compounds of formula (I) wherein R<1> includes alkyl, halo, nitro, amino, cyano, alkoxy, and alkoxycarbonyl; R<2> is alkyl and substituted alkyl; and R<3> is OH or NHOH, are useful for inhibiting matrix metalloproteinase enzymes in animals, and as such, prevent and treat diseases resulting from the breakdown of connective tissues. |
