A compact electrode for discharge surface treatment is produced by pressing a mixture of a metal or metallic compound powder and a soft metal powder to serve as a binder. By causing discharge between the electrode and the workpiece, a film of the electrode material or of a substance produced by a reaction of the electrode material by the discharge is formed on the workpiece.
