PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a formatting method of optical recording medium to reset position information of an auxiliary spare area registered in a DMA in the case of formatting. SOLUTION: In the case of allocating the auxiliary spare area as required and formatting an optical recording medium on a particular area of which position information of the allocated auxiliary spare area is recorded, the position information of the auxiliary spare area recorded in the particular area is reset so as to make judgment on the auxiliary spare area by between a file system and a driver coincident after the formatting to thereby avoid system control from being confused and maintain the compatibility even when the control is shifted to other driver.
