PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium for high density recording in which an electromagnetic conversion characteristics, especially a S/N ratio, are improved. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer consisting mainly of ferromagnetic powder and a binder on a supporting body, is characterized in that the ferromagnetic powder is ferromagnetic metal powder having an average major axis length of 25 to 100 nm or the hexagonal ferritic powder having an average plate diameter of 15 to 40 nm, the thickness of the magnetic layer is 0.01 to 0.2μm, and alignment is performed by smoothing processing without performing magnetic field aligning processing.
