PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve safety, and prevent damage to an engine by securing normal action of fuel injection. SOLUTION: In this reference signal monitoring method for control of an internal combustion engine of a vehicle, two reference signals (first reference signal Is and second reference signal Id) are generated to be used for computing two control signals E1 and E2 for fuel injection in the internal combustion engine in a common rail system, the first reference signal and the second reference signal are separately counted, their counted values are compared, and emergency measures and/or error recognition measures are actuated based on their deviation. In this constitution, error at interruption timing can be speedily and securely recognized. Larger safety can thus be provided to a driver of an automobile, and engine damage due to error injection can be prevented. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
