PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film electrode which has high strength and low resistance, and by using the electrode, to provide an electric double layer capacitor with large capacitance density and small inner resistance and especially to provide an electric double layer capacitor suitable for an application which requires a large capacitance and a large current. SOLUTION: The carbonaceous material comprises a sheet-like body formed by using polytetrafluoroethylene as a binder, and has a thickness of 0.005-0.25 mm, a pore rate of 50-80 %, and tensile strength of 1.5 kg/cm<SP>2</SP>or more in at least one direction.
