PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the luminance level of the whole set because the control state of luminance in an image display block can be known by a luminance calculation part included in an image processing block and a luminance control part included in the video display block can be controlled and to realize the saving of power consumption while obtaining a luminance characteristic suitable for picture formation in the television set. SOLUTION: The video display device is provided with a 1st video signal luminance control part for inputting a video signal outputted from a video signal processing part and controlling the luminance of a video signal, a 2nd video signal luminance control part for controlling the luminance of the video signal outputted from the 1st video signal luminance control part, a video display part for displaying the video signal outputted from the 2nd video signal luminance control part as an image, and an average video level detection part for detecting the average video level of the image displayed on the video display part and outputting the detected level to the 1st and 2nd video signal luminance control parts. Each of the 1st and 2nd video signal luminance control parts controls the luminance of the video signal in accordance with the inputted average video level and outputs the luminance controlled video signal.
