PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear motion unit with a retaining piece capable of facilitating gap adjustment after filling rolling bodies up at assembling works and preventing a malfunction caused by the retaining piece. SOLUTION: A row 34 is provided so that a general retaining piece 32a and a globular special retaining piece 32b are interposed between rolling bodies 30 circulated in an endless circulating passage 22. The outer diameter Ds of the special retaining piece 32b is smaller than the outer diameter Db of the rolling body 30. Two sets of recessed portions 36b are formed on a spherical surface of the special retaining piece 32b at peripheral intervals of 180°. The special retaining piece 32b is movable through the endless circulating passage 22 while the special retaining piece is supported between adjacent rolling bodies 30. The special retaining piece 32b is independently rolling through the endless circulating passage 22, and comprises a ball screw 10 which is the linear motion unit with a movable retaining piece.
