PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas storage material which is easily available at a low cost, very light, free from the danger of explosion, and also capable of easily storing and discharging gases, and particularly useful for a fuel cell, and to provide a method of storing and discharging gases. SOLUTION: The gas storage material comprising a carbonized cotton produced by firing cotton, which is characterized by storing gases at a low temperature and discharging the stored gases at a high temperature is provided. The method of storing and discharging gases is characterized in that the carbonized cotton produced by firing the cotton stores the gases, such as hydrogen, ammonia, formaldehyde gases, and the like at a low temperature, and the carbonized cotton having stored the gases is made to again discharge the stored gases by heating at a higher temperature than the storing temperature.
