922,746. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. RHEINISCHE GUMMI-UND CELLULOID-FABRIK. Oct. 28, 1959 [Oct. 28, 1958], No. 36621/59. Class 42 (1). In a process for effecting fluid-tight adhesion between overlapping of insulating and covering sheets of thermoplastic synthetic materials having an elasticity similar to rubber, thermoplastic water-insoluble and water-impermeable intermediate strips are placed between the sheets at the overlapping areas, the strips consisting of suitable material having on both sides at least a surface layer of a synthetic plastic agglutinant comprising lower molecular weight polyisobutylene, or mixtures of polyisobutylenes of various molecular weights or alternatively consisting entirely of polyvinyl chloride containing a non-volatile or difficultly volatile plasticizer and exhibiting agglutinating properties with respect to the sheets and neither flowing-off nor becoming brittle under open-air temperature conditions, and the strips and sheets are bonded together by pressure. The agglutinants may contain fillers &c. and the strips may contain laminates of materials which do not have agglutinating properties. Fig. 2 shows a section through a fluid-tight joint at the overlapping of two sheets 1 and 2. An intermediate strip is placed at the overlapping area between the bevelled sheets and pressure is applied to the joint to form a seal. The strip consists of agglutinating layer 7 having embedded therein a tissue or non- agglutinating plastic layer 8. |
