PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image reading system which calculates a reading time and displays it. SOLUTION: The image reading system consists of an image reading unit 1 and a host computer 2, and is operated from the host computer 2 side. The host computer 2 includes a display monitor 2A and an operating member 2B, and the member 2B is provided with a keyboard and a mouse. The unit 1 has a CPU 11, memory 12, an interface circuit 13, an illumination LED driving circuit 14, an analog signal processing circuit 15, an A/D converter 16, a digital signal processing circuit 17, a timing control circuit 18, a document moving motor driving circuit 19, a magnetic signal processing circuit 20, a line sensor 21, a lens L, a document moving motor 22, an LED light source 23, an optical information reading sensor 24, and a document position detecting sensor 25.
