PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a glass for slit exposure from being broken by a gap holding member at the time of closing an automatic document feeder. SOLUTION: An image reader having a document moving read function of reading a document moving on the glass for slit exposure by an optical system stopped under the glass for slit exposure and an optical system moving read function of reading a document placed on a platen glass by moving the optical system under the platen glass is provided with a document guide member which is arranged close to and below the glass for exposure slit and guides the document and the gap holding member which is supported by an elastic member having elasticity and holds a gap between the glass for slit exposure and the document guide member.
