PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head device wherein a sliding surface shape can be constituted of irreducible minimum members while stable sliding characteristics with a magnetic tape are secured, and which is reduced in cost by reducing the number of components. SOLUTION: This magnetic head device 1 is provided with a head chip 13 having a plurality of magnetic head elements 12 on one side, a pair of rail chips 14 arranged to face one side face of the head chip 13 and to sandwich the head chip, a pedestal 15 to which the head chip 13 is attached, and a flexible printed wiring board 16 connected to the terminal parts 12a of the plurality of magnetic head elements 12. The rails chips 14 are set to have a length larger than the long side length of the head chip 13 and enough to secure the sliding range of the magnetic tape. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
