PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic detector which is capable of restraining a side leading from occurring by increasing the reproduction output and restraining an effective reproduction track from spreading, especially in the reduction of a track width, and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: A ferromagnetic layer 30 is formed on a free magnetic layer 28, on the side ends of the element via a non-magnetic intermediate layer 29; a second antiferromagnetic layer 31 provided with a spacing C wider than a gap D provided to the ferromagnetic layer 30; the ferromagnetic layer 30 is extended more toward the center of a track in a cross direction farther than the inner end face 31b of the second ferromagnetic layer 31; and an electrode layer 37 is formed, from the second antiferromagnetic magnetic layer 31 and the ferromagnetic layer 30. By this setup, the magnetic detector is made capable of increasing its reproduction output, suppressing the effective reproduction track from increasing in width, and properly restraining the side leading from occurring.
