PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device enhancing dark contrast and to provide a method of driving a display panel. SOLUTION: The display panel has a unit luminescent region comprising a first discharge cell and a second discharge cell having a light absorbing layer, and formed in a crossing part of a plurality of first line electrodes and a plurality of second line electrodes formed by alternately and every pair replacing arranging order with a plurality of column electrodes, and when the display panel is driven, sustain discharge carrying light emission in charge of a display image is conducted with the first discharge cell, and various control discharge accompanied by light emission not taking part in the display image is conducted with the second discharge cell.
