PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve practical sensitivity of a gas detector without restricting its entire shape or size. SOLUTION: This gas detector is provided with two opposed substrates 20 and 21, and a calibration space 50 formed between the two substrates 20 and 21 and communicating with the outside. A gas sensing part 30 is provided for detecting the concentration of gas in air flowing into the space 50. A catalyst 41 is provided for purifying air in the space 50 in order to perform zero-point calibration on the sensing part 30. The catalyst 41 comprises a thermal catalyst and is provided with an electric heater 42 for activating the catalyst 41. The space 50 is formed so that the ratioδ/L of substrate intervalδto substrate size L in the space 50 is 2/3 or less. Further, a current-applying/ controlling part 61 for applying a pulse-like electric current to the heater 42 while the sensing part 30 is calibrated. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
