PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp that can be operated stably even if it is a high wattage (e.g., 150 W or more) lamp.

SOLUTION: The high pressure discharge lamp comprises an arc tube 100 enclosing a luminous material and having a pair of electrodes 102 opposed to each other, and a pair of sealing portions (101) for sealing metal foils 103 electrically connected to the pair of electrodes 102 individually. External leads 104 are connected to the metal foils 103 at ends thereof opposite to the luminous tube 100. At least one of the external leads 104 extends outward from an end face 101e of the sealing portion 101b, and a cap portion 10 for covering the external lead 104 is provided at a root portion 104e of the external lead 104 exposed from the end face 101e of the sealing portion.
