<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multilayer cell, or the cell containing plural superposed substrates joined in pairs by a sealed frame. <P>SOLUTION: This invention relates to a multilayer cell, particularly a liquid display cell 1, an electrochemical photo-cell or combination of the liquid crystal display cell and the electrochemical photo-cell. The multilayer cell has the substrates 2, 4, 6 and 8 with n sheets superposed, n being an integer 3 or higher. The substrates 2, 4, 6 and 8 are joined by the sealed frames 14, 16 and 18 defining the boundaries of (n-1) sealed spaces 20, 22 and 24 containing an optically or electrochemically active medium. An upper surface 10 of the first substrate 2 and a lower surface 12 of the last substrate 8 form an outer surface of the cell 1. The multilayer cell 1 contains (n-1) filling holes 26, 28 and 30 at least partly disposed on the cell surface. These holes 26, 28 and 30 communicate with different spaces and pass through at least one space to reach a space wherein the holes are joined.
