PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ground condition monitoring method and a device enabling a worker to grasp even two-dimensional distribution of ground conditions of a working face and evaluate the ground conditions precisely. SOLUTION: In this ground condition monitoring method, outputs of a plurality of sound wave sensors attached to a cutter face of an excavator are displayed and recorded in synchronization with the rotation of the cutter face to detect the distribution of ground conditions of the working face. This ground condition monitoring device is provided with a plurality of sound wave sensors, an amplifier amplifying an acoustic detection signal of the sound wave sensor, a filter cutting unnecessary frequency component among amplified signals, a waveform processor processing waveform of the acoustic detection signal filtered by the filter, an angle sensor detecting rotation angle of the cutter face, and a data display/recording device displaying and recording output data of the waveform processor in synchronization with the rotation of the cutter face.
