PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a volume reduction machine for plastics which eliminates a dead space in a treating chamber to effectively utilize the chamber, facilitates the maintenance work, and can deal with the increase in shearing force of a rotating shaft due to the increase in the size of the machine. SOLUTION: The volume reduction machine for plastics has a treating chamber 2 for treating plastics P charged thereinto from a hopper 3. In the chamber 2, crushing arms 6 for crushing the plastics P, a rotating shaft 5 having a screw blade 7 for sending the plastics P forward, and a tapered compression pipe 9 surrounding the screw blade 7 at the front part of rotating shaft 5 are installed. The rotating shaft 5 is divided into a base section 5B and a screw section 5S; the base section 5B is fitted into a speed reducer 16 of a motor 15 installed in a motor chamber 4 at the rear side of the treating chamber 2; and the base section 5B and the screw section 5S are coupled together so as to be freely joinable and separable by using a split-cylinder coupling 12 in the motor chamber 4.
